The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) laid down in 1976 rules regulating the arbitration proceedings. These rules played an important role not only on the level of the national laws that adopted them but also on the level of the arbitration centers that adopted them.
Although the aim of the persons who laid down the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules was not to use them within the framework of investment-related disputes, we find that the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules were also resorted to in investment disputes arising between States and the nationals of other States. Following the elapse of thirty years on this pioneering experience with the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, the experts found, in light of their experience in applying them, that it is time to revise them.
It is in this framework Beirut Arab University - Faculty of Law and The Arab Association for International Arbitration with the support of Al-Iktissad Wal-Aamal Group organize the “Conference on the Revision of the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules In light of 30 of experience, A look into the future” will be held between 15th and 17th April under the patronage of H.E. Saad Hariri, President of the Council of Ministers in Lebanon at the Beirut Arab University.
The conference will deal with all the issues raised by the application of the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules on the one hand and to present the point of view of the speakers in this regard on the other hand.
The conference will convene with the attendance of top Arab and International experts and investors, among which are the Secretary-General of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), and Nationals of Other States (ICSID), Washington, President of the Spanish Court of Arbitration in Spain, Chairman of the French Arbitration Commission of ICC France, President of the French Committee of Arbitration, President of the Geneva Global Arbitration Forum in, Secretary-General of the Commercial Arbitration Centre of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Director of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) and the Deputy Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes between States.
