
H.E. Hossam Zaki
Assistant Secretary General and Chief of Staff
Ambassador Hossam Zaki has served as Assistant Secretary General and Chief of Staff of the League of Arab States since July 2016. Prior to this, he held several senior diplomatic positions, including Assistant Foreign Minister of Egypt for European Affairs (2015–2016) and Ambassador to Brazil (2012–2015).
From 2007 to 2012, he served as Senior Middle East Advisor to Egypt’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Chief of Staff, also acting as Ministry Spokesperson until early 2011. His previous assignments include Deputy Ambassador to the United Kingdom (2005–2007), Spokesperson for the Secretary General of the Arab League (2003–2005), and Head of the Department of East Arab States (2002–2003).
Between 1996 and 2001, Ambassador Zaki served at Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, focusing on Middle East and Arab affairs. He was a member of Egypt’s delegation to the UN Security Council (1996–1997) and served as Rapporteur of the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations for six years.
Earlier in his career, he held positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs including Advisor on African Affairs, Political Officer in the Department of Israeli Affairs, and junior diplomatic postings in Ethiopia and elsewhere.
Ambassador Zaki holds a BA in Business Administration from Helwan University and an International Diploma in Public Administration from the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA), Paris. He received his early education at the French Jesuit School in Cairo. He was born in Cairo in 1965.
